ABOUT

Body•Mind•Voice is a contemporary practice in actor training, bringing together acting, movement and voice to develop responsive, connected and physically available performers.

Our actor training is rooted deeply in the Meisner approach and Practical Aesthetics. Founder Lawrence Carmichael trained with multiple teachers with direct lineage to Sanford Meisner himself. The practice is further informed by Grotowski, Uta Hagen, Stella Adler, Cicely Berry and a broad range of physical, vocal and psychophysical approaches to actor training.

Our ongoing training is centred around sustained Meisner courses and weekly drop-in training sessions, branching out into dedicated movement and voice practice, character and emotional work, physical theatre, intimacy and consent, fight work, screen acting, self-tape and audition preparation. Rather than treating acting, body and voice as isolated disciplines, we explore how they can meet to develop the whole performer.

Lawrence is an acting, movement and voice teacher with over 30 years’ professional experience as an actor, singer, director and specialist movement practitioner across theatre, film and television. He has taught and developed performers in Australia, Canada, Europe and the UK and is currently a Movement Lecturer at East 15 Acting School. His professional practice also encompasses fight direction, stage combat, intimacy and consent, bringing an understanding of physical storytelling, boundaries and the demands placed on the performer’s body that continues to inform the wider Body•Mind•Voice practice.

That breadth of experience informs Body•Mind•Voice, but the practice is larger than any one methodology or practitioner. Through courses, drop-ins, workshops, play readings and development opportunities, Body•Mind•Voice is a warm, rigorous and generous community where actors can train, experiment, play, challenge habits and continue developing their craft – finding greater freedom, connection and confidence in their work.
